Tips For Sustainable Gift Giving

It's the thought that counts, and the personal touch makes any gift more meaningful and memorable. With a little planning, you can give more while spending less.

01. Give Services or Experiences

Giving the gift of an experience can bring fun, learning and memories that hold value for years. For example, tickets to a show or concert can offer lasting value with minimal impact on resources. Sports events, local attractions, gift certificates for rock-climbing centers, ice-rink memberships, horseback riding, swimming pool programs and museum memberships are other examples. Gifts of service require little or no use of natural resources, and are very personal and memorable. The gift of You – your time, energy or expertise are as ‘gift-worthy’ as anything you can put in a box.

And gifts made locally often have a story which goes with the gift, since the artisan and the origin of the gift are known. Give your social media a scroll too, Im sure you can find tons of awesome local makers and creators to shop from.

04. Give Secondhand + "Re-Gift"

Try thrifting or visiting your local antique store to find that perfect gift. If you or a loved one share a similar hobby, gift one of your favourite pieces with a handwritten note for an extra sentiment. Also keep your eye out on your local marketplace or Kijiji for a secondhand item in good condition.

05. Give The Gift of a Donation

If all else fails give the gift of a donation. If your loved one has a charity close to their hearts or a cause they feel strongly for, giving a donation in their name is sure to put a smile on their face.
